Ecofont: Good idea. Bad Execution?

What is ecofont?

Many people are concerned about wasting paper when printing, but until now I’ve never heard much concern about the amounts of ink and toner that are used.  A Dutch company called SPRANQ has recently created a new font called Ecofont that places tiny circles inside of characters in order to cut down on ink use when printing.  An independent test found that it does reduce ink usage and costs when compared with many common fonts such as Arial and Calibri, but is actually slightly less efficient than Century Gothic.  Ecofont also appears to be pretty wide, so while you might be saving ink you will also be using more paper.

Even if it isn’t as good as advertised, it’s still an interesting idea.  And it brought an issue to my attention that I had never considered before: choosing a font that minimizes ink and paper usage.

  1. Great article, thank you for sharing! So has any research been made on which font saves the most paper? And what about the marketing for ecofonts, is there efforts put into that?
